EATING POETRY

Written by Brett and Lynette Vantreese
Based on a poem by Mark Strand

1ST VERSE
Ink runs from the corners of my mouth
There's no joy like mine
I've been eating poetry

The librarian does not believe what she sees
Her eyes are sad
She walks with her hands in her dress

CHORUS
The poems are gone
The light is dim
Something's on the basement stairs
Threatening to come in
I've been eating poetry

2ND VERSE
The feelings freed by words rush in as dogs
Their eyeballs roll
Their blond legs burn like brush

The librarian does not understand, she stomps her feet
And begins to cry
I lick her hand, she screams

CHORUS
I'm a new man
I snarl and bark
I romp with joy
In the bookish dark

The poems are gone
The light is dim
The something on the basement stairs
Decided to come in
I've been eating poetry
