In the cheesy movie, Thing Called Love, a gritty New Yorker played by Samantha Mathis hops a bus to Nashville, determined to make true her dreams of becoming a country-music star. After sufficient struggle (including a trashy relationship with a swaggering character played by River Phoenix), she finally gets her big break at the world-famous Bluebird Café. Singer/songwriter Lynette Vantreese could've been cast in that role – she's even performed a sold-out show at the Bluebird. Vantreese has improved upon the Hollywood ending, though, sharing stages with Edwin McCain and receiving a warm mention in Andrew Vaughan's book Women in Rock. More folk-oriented than country, Vantreese is a fresh voice on the Nashville Scene (that Music City alt-weekly has bestowed upon Vantreese more Critics' Pick awards than on any other artist in town). She plays a 10 p.m. show at the Town Pump on Saturday, Jan. 4. For more information, call 669-4808.
